Stenomelania plicaria, commonly known as the Yellow Chopstick Snail, is a hardy freshwater snail native to Taiwan and regions across the South Pacific like Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. It is a popular choice for home aquariums due to its unique, spike-shaped tan shell and its beneficial role as an efficient scavenger and substrate sifter.
Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: They feature a long, tapered shell that can reach up to approximately 2.5 inches (63 mm) in length. Their coloration typically ranges from tan to yellow.
  • Behavior: These snails are nocturnal and spend much of their time burrowing into the aquarium substrate, which helps prevent gas pockets and maintains substrate health. They are completely peaceful and will not harm live plants or tank mates. [1]
  • Diet: As scavengers, they primarily feed on algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter. In a tank setting, they also accept high-quality dry or frozen fish foods.
