Corydoras duplicareus, commonly known as the Duplicate Cory or False Adolfoi, is a highly sought-after freshwater catfish native to the blackwater tributaries of the Amazon in Brazil. It is prized for its striking contrast and peaceful nature, making it a favorite for community aquariums.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: It features a creamy white body with a bold black facial "bandit" mask and a wide black stripe running down its back. A bright orange or gold patch sits just in front of the dorsal fin.
- Size: This species typically grows to a maximum size of approximately 1.5 to 2.6 inches (6.5 cm).
- Behavior: They are social, bottom-dwelling scavengers that should be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals to feel secure.
- Special Trait: Like other Corydoras, they are facultative air breathers and will occasionally dart to the surface to gulp atmospheric air.
Care and Water Parameters
- Water Type: Soft and slightly acidic water is preferred, especially for breeding.
- Temperature: Ideally maintained between 22–26°C (72–79°F).
- pH Range: 6.0 to 7.2.
- Diet: Omnivorous; they thrive on a mix of high-quality sinking pellets, live baby brine shrimp, and frozen daphnia.
Differentiation from C. adolfoi
As its name "duplicareus" suggests, this species is a near-duplicate of Corydoras adolfoi. The primary reliable way to distinguish them is by examining the pectoral fin spines:
- C. duplicareus: Has serrated posterior edges on the pectoral spines.
- C. adolfoi: Has smooth pectoral spines
