Quick Care Statistics (2026)
  • Scientific Name: Hypancistrus sp.
  • Common Name: King Tiger Pleco, Yellow King Tiger, Gold King Tiger
  • Adult Size: Approximately 5–6 inches (13–15 cm)
  • Lifespan: 10 to 15 years with proper care
  • Minimum Tank Size: 20–30 gallons (approx. 75–115 liters)
  • Temperature: 78°F – 86°F (26°C – 30°C)
  • pH Level: 5.5 – 7.5 (prefers slightly acidic to neutral)
Dietary Requirements
Unlike many other plecos, the L333 is primarily carnivorous rather than an algae eater.
  • Preferred Foods: High-protein sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, carnivore gel diets, and occasional vegetable matter like blanched zucchini for fiber.
  • Algae Control: They provide very little help with algae control in a tank.
Habitat and Behavior
  • Environment: They require highly oxygenated water with strong flow to mimic their natural river habitat.
  • Hiding Spaces: As nocturnal fish, they must have plenty of caves, driftwood, and rocky crevices to hide during the day.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful community fish, though they may be territorial toward other bottom-dwellers or their own kind if the tank is too small.
Breeding
L333 plecos are cave spawners. Successful breeding typically requires:
  1. Strict Water Quality: Zero ammonia and nitrites, with low nitrates.
  2. Caves: Spawning caves should be slightly larger than the fish’s body.
  3. Parental Care: The male traps the female in the cave to spawn and then guards the eggs until they hatch
