The Orange Eye Royal Blue Tiger (OERBT)
shrimp is considered the "Crown Jewel" of the tiger shrimp family, prized for its deep, velvety midnight-blue to black body and striking "glowing" orange eyes. Unlike standard Blue Tigers, the Royal Blue grade is the result of extreme selective breeding to achieve a solid, opaque color that often completely obscures traditional tiger stripes.

Grading and Show Standards
In the world of high-end shrimp "shows" and hobbyist sales, OERBTs are evaluated on several key aesthetic factors:
  • Color Opacity: High-grade specimens must be fully opaque, with deep coloration extending even to the legs and underbelly.
  • Stripe Absence: While standard OEBTs are graded on stripe clarity, the "Royal" variant is defined by the loss of these stripes through selective breeding, resulting in a sleek, uniform appearance.
  • Eye Contrast: The eyes should be a vibrant, near-fluorescent orange or golden hue, providing a sharp contrast against the dark body.
  • Stability: Because they do not always breed 100% "true," a show-quality colony is one that consistently produces a high percentage of deep-blue offspring rather than "blonde" culls.
Essential Care & Parameters
These shrimp are generally considered intermediate to advanced in difficulty due to their sensitivity to water fluctuations.
Parameter Recommended Range
pH 6.0 – 7.5 (prefers slightly acidic to neutral)
GH 4 – 8 dGH
KH 0 – 4 dKH (low KH is essential for soft water)
TDS 100 – 200 ppm
Temperature 60°F – 77°F (15.5°C – 25°C)
  • Water Source: It is highly recommended to use remineralized RO/DI water to maintain precise control over these parameters.
  • Substrate: Using a dark, active buffering substrate like ADA Aqua Soil helps maintain the necessary acidic pH and prevents the shrimp's color from fading.
  • Tank Mates: Due to their high value and specific needs, they are best kept in single-species tanks or with other peaceful invertebrates like snails
