Orange Eye Black Devil Caridina
The Orange Eye Black Devil shrimp (Caridina cf. cantonensis) is a selectively bred dwarf shrimp variety known for its striking, deep black body and contrasting, glowing orange eyes. They are a popular choice in the aquarium hobby for their unique appearance and generally peaceful nature.
Appearance and Characteristics
The Orange Eye Black Devil shrimp is a Caridina species that typically reaches a size of 2.5 to 3 cm (about 1 to 1.25 inches). The deep black coloration can have an iridescent sheen, sometimes appearing like an "oil slick" when light hits it just right, and mature adults may develop metallic flecks on their heads. The bright orange eyes provide a dramatic contrast to their dark bodies, making them a focal point in planted aquariums.
Water Parameters and Care
As a Caridina shrimp, the Orange Eye Black Devil thrives in soft, acidic water, which often requires the use of remineralized reverse osmosis (RO) water and an active substrate to maintain the proper pH and hardness. Stability in water conditions is crucial for their health.
Parameter  Recommended Range
Temperature 60–78°F (15–25°C)
pH 5.5–7.2 (optimal 6.5–6.8)
GH 3–6
KH 0–1
TDS 90–150 ppm
Diet and Behavior
These are peaceful, omnivorous shrimp that will feed on biofilm, algae, detritus, and microorganisms found within the aquarium. They should be offered a varied diet that includes high-quality commercial shrimp pellets or wafers, as well as natural food sources like blanched vegetables or almond leaves. They are suitable for community aquariums with other small, non-predatory tankmates but are often best kept in a shrimp-only tank to ensure their well-being.
