The L066 King Tiger Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L066) is a popular, strikingly marked black-and-white striped catfish native to Brazil's Rio Xingu. Growing to about 4.5–5 inches, they thrive in warm (\(80-85^{\circ}F\)), well-oxygenated water with high flow, requiring a protein-rich diet rather than algae. They are peaceful but shy, needing hiding spots like driftwood and caves.
Key Care Requirements & Information
- Temperature & Water: Thrives at \(80-85^{\circ}F\) (\(27-29^{\circ}C\)), with a pH of 5.8–7.0. High water quality and oxygenation are crucial.
- Diet: Primarily carnivorous; feed high-protein, sinking foods like frozen bloodworms, carnivore pellets, and shrimp pellets. They are not efficient algae eaters.
- Tank Setup: Requires a minimum of 30 gallons. Decorate with plenty of caves and driftwood to provide hiding spaces, which reduces stress.
- Size & Lifespan: Adults reach approximately \(4-5\) inches (\(10-13\) cm).
- Tank Mates: Peaceful toward other species, making them ideal for community tanks with fish like Discus, Cardinals, and Corydoras. Avoid housing with other Hypancistrus species to prevent hybridization.
- Sexing: Males tend to have a more distinct pattern, longer odontodes (bristles) on their pectoral spines, and a slightly darker color. [1, 2, 3, 4,
Appearance
The L066 is frequently confused with the L333, but typically features a clearer white base color contrasted with black scribbled lines. Because they are a wild species, pattern variations are common
