The L136 pleco (Hypancistrus sp.), also known as the Demini Angelicus Pleco, is a small, peacefully natured freshwater catfish native to the Rio Negro and Rio Demini basins in Brazil.
Key Profile & Appearance
  • Size: Grows up to 4 to 5 inches (10–12 cm) long.
  • Appearance: Dark brown or black body covered in fine white, cream, or golden spots and reticulated line patterns. Varieties are categorized into L136a, L136b, and L136c based on spot size and pattern density.
  • Lifespan: 8 to 10 years.
  • Temperament: Peaceful and shy, though slightly territorial with other bottom-dwelling plecos if space is tight.
  • Tank Requirements
  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (approx. 100–115 liters) for a single specimen.
  • Water Parameters: Temperature of 72–84°F (22–29°C), pH between 5.0 and 7.5.
  • Environment: Strong, oxygen-rich filtration with moderate water flow. Provide a soft sandy substrate alongside driftwood, smooth rocks, and pleco caves to satisfy their nocturnal and secretive habits.
  • Diet
  • Carnivorous/Omnivorous: Unlike common algae eaters, L136 plecos have small mouths unsuited for grazing heavy algae.
  • Feeding: Feed sinking carnivorous pellets, frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional blanched vegetables or light algae wafers.
