The Galaxy Rasbora Galaxy Rasbora, scientifically known as Danio margaritatus, is a striking nano fish prized by aquarists for its deep blue body covered in pearlescent spots that resemble a starry night sky. Although commonly called a "rasbora," it was reclassified in 2008 into the Danio genus and is also frequently referred to as the Celestial Pearl Danio(CPD).
Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: Features a metallic blue-to-gray body with irregular rows of shimmer spots and fiery red-orange fins with black banding.
  • Size: These are true nano fish, typically reaching a maximum length of about 0.75 to 1 inch (2–2.5 cm).
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they generally live for 3 to 5 years.
  • Behavior: They are peaceful but shy, schooling fish that feel most secure in groups of 6 to 10 or more.
Aquarium Care Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group, though 15–20 gallons allows for more natural behavior.
  • Setup: They thrive in heavily planted environments with mosses, floating plants, and dark substrate to enhance their colors and provide security.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Prefer slightly cooler tropical waters, between 68°F and 78°F (20–26°C).
    • pH: Maintain between 6.5 and 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (5–12 dGH).
Diet and Compatibility
  • Diet: Omnivorous micro-predators. They accept high-quality micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen treats like baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops.
  • Tank Mates: Best kept with other peaceful nano species such as Chili Rasboras, Ember Tetras, and freshwater shrimp like Cherry Shrimp. Avoid large or aggressive fish that might view them as prey.
