The zebra babaulti shrimp (Caridina cf. babaulti 'Zebra') is a popular, hardy freshwater dwarf shrimp in the aquarium hobby, known for its distinctive black and white or dark brown stripes. Originating from India and other parts of Asia, this peaceful omnivore is a great scavenger that helps clean the tank by feeding on algae and biofilm.
Key Characteristics and Care
  • Scientific Name: Caridina cf. babaulti
  • Size: They typically grow to about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5-3.8 cm) in length.
  • Lifespan: Their average lifespan is around 1-2 years.
  • Coloration: The "zebra" variant features a striped pattern, but the species itself comes in a variety of colors including green, brown, blue, and yellow. They can also exhibit a form of chromatic adaptation, changing color quickly when startled or agitated.
  • Temperament: They are peaceful and somewhat shy, making them ideal for dedicated shrimp tanks or community tanks with small, non-aggressive fish.
  • Diet: As omnivorous scavengers, their primary diet in an aquarium consists of biofilm, algae, and decaying plant matter. This can be supplemented with high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini), and occasional protein foods.
  • Hardiness: They are generally hardy and can adapt to a wider range of water parameters than many other Caridina species, similar to Neocaridina shrimp care requirements.
Aquarium Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 5-10 gallons is recommended for a small colony.
  • Water Parameters: Stability is more important than specific values within the acceptable range.
    • Temperature: 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C)
    • pH: 6.5 to 7.8
    • GH (General Hardness): 2.0 to 20.0 dGH
    • KH (Carbonate Hardness): 3-8 dKH
  • Tank Setup: A well-established, planted tank with plenty of hiding spots (plants, rocks, driftwood) is ideal. A sponge filter is recommended to protect small shrimp, especially fry, from being sucked in.
  • Compatibility: They will not crossbreed with Neocaridina species, making them suitable tank mates for these and other peaceful invertebrates. Avoid tank mates that are large or aggressive enough to eat them.
Breeding
Zebra babaulti shrimp breed easily in freshwater aquariums with optimal and stable water conditions. Females carry 30-50 eggs for about 30 days, after which the eggs hatch into miniature versions of the adults (no larval stage in brackish water is needed, unlike Amano shrimp). The fry are very small and grow slowly, requiring a mature tank with ample biofilm and algae as a food source.
Babaulti shrimp, scientifically named Caridina cf. babaulti, are a diverse and generally hardy group of dwarf shrimp originating from India and other parts of Asia. They are known for their green or zebra-striped variants, are peaceful, and require a 5-gallon or larger tank with parameters generally similar to Neocaridina shrimp. Their care is considered easier than many other Caridina species.

Care and tank requirements
  • Tank size: A 5-gallon tank is the minimum, but a 10-gallon tank is recommended for a colony.
