The blue eyed lemon pleco (also known as the L144 Blue Eye Lemon Bristlenose Pleco or Bushynose Pleco) is a popular, small, and peaceful freshwater aquarium fish known for its striking vibrant yellow body and bright blue eyes. Unlike the common pleco, it only reaches an adult size of about 4-6 inches, making it suitable for most home aquariums.
Key Characteristics and Care
  • Scientific Name: Ancistrus sp. (L-number: L144)
  • Adult Size: 4 to 6 inches (10-15 cm)
  • Lifespan: 5 to 12 years with proper care
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, making it an excellent community tank mate. Males can be territorial with other males, so ample hiding spots are recommended.
  • Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for plant matter. They are excellent algae eaters but require a varied diet of high-quality vegetable flakes, sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and occasional protein like bloodworms.
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended.
  • Habitat: They are nocturnal and appreciate a well-decorated aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, smooth rocks, and driftwood. Driftwood is important for their digestion.
  • Water Parameters: Hardy and adaptable, but prefer stable conditions.
    • Temperature: 72° - 86° F (22° - 30° C)
    • pH: 6.5 - 7.5
    • Water Hardness: 6 - 10 dKH
  • Special Note: Males develop distinct, prominent, bristle-like appendages on their snout as they mature, while females have fewer or none.
The blue eyed lemon pleco is a hardy fish that is great for beginners and helps keep the tank clean by grazing on algae and leftover food.
