The ranchu is a hooded, fancy goldfish variety prized in Japan for its distinct rounded, egg-shaped body and absence of a dorsal fin. With its prominent, fleshy head growth known as a "wen," the ranchu is sometimes referred to as the "king of goldfish". They can grow to 6–8 inches and are available in many color variations, including orange, red, white, black, and calico.
