Black Galaxy Snowflake
The Black  Snowflake shrimp, also known by names like Black Galaxy Snowflake or Black Galaxy Fishbone, is a high-grade, selectively bred Caridina species prized in the aquarium hobby for its intricate and vibrant coloration.
Appearance
This shrimp is characterized by its vivid red body, which is complemented by distinct white patterns:
  • "Snowflake" or "Galaxy" spots on its head, resembling a cluster of small stars.
  • A unique "fishbone" pattern or stripe often runs along the dorsal side (back).
  • Some high-grade individuals may also feature "spider legs," which are legs with additional coloration or patterns.
Aquarium Care and Requirements
Red Snowflake shrimp are sensitive and are best suited for intermediate to experienced aquarists due to their specific water parameter needs. They are Caridina shrimp, which generally require softer, more acidic water than the hardier Neocaridina varieties (like the Red Cherry shrimp).
Parameter  Value
Scientific Name Caridina cf. cantonensis (selectively bred variant)
Difficulty Medium/Challenging
Temperature 68–75°F (20–24°C)
pH 5.5–6.5 (slightly acidic)
General Hardness (GH) 4–6 dGH
Carbonate Hardness (KH) <1 dKH or 0–4 dKH
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) 100–150 ppm
Minimum Tank Size 10 gallons (approx. 40 liters)
Key Considerations
  • Water Stability is Crucial: These shrimp are highly sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters, ammonia, and nitrites, which must be kept at zero.
  • Buffered Substrate: A buffered aquarium substrate is essential for maintaining the stable, low pH and GH levels they require.
  • Diet: They are omnivores and primarily feed on biofilm and algae, supplemented with high-quality commercial shrimp pellets and occasional blanched vegetables.
  • Peaceful Community: They are non-aggressive and thrive in dedicated shrimp-only tanks or with other peaceful, non-predatory tank mates.
